Amazon Expands Physical Retail Footprint with New Illinois Location
Amazon has filed plans for a 229,000-square-foot retail facility in Orland Park, Illinois, signaling another push into brick-and-mortar commerce. The single-level store will stock groceries, household essentials, and general merchandise, dwarfing the average Walmart Supercenter by 50,000 square feet. Warehouse space and dedicated pickup areas for delivery drivers underscore the hybrid retail-logistics model.
The MOVE continues Amazon's decade-long experimentation with physical formats, from bookstores to cashierless grocery concepts. While many initiatives have shuttered, the company retains its Whole Foods acquisition as an anchor. "We're always exploring new ways to serve customers," a spokesperson said, framing the Illinois location as another iteration in this evolution.
